IT Support Companies are not normally known for their friendly approachable manner or indeed for their dogs! One London IT Support Company has used the owner’s dogs extensively in their marketing – and to great effect. This article tells you how an IT Support Company discovered this marketing secret and how they now use it throughout their marketing.
Day 1 - Not Enough IT Support Engineers!
When it started the IT Support Company in question really was a one-man-and-a-dog operation trading out of the owner’s spare bedroom. It has now grown substantially since then. Many companies – not just IT Support Companies – start in exactly the same way. There’s no shame in that, however if the business looks too small prospective clients may go elsewhere. That’s why the dogs – now known as the "IT Support Dogs" – came to be on the company website. To make the About Us page on the website look fuller and more substantial the company owner included a picture of his dog (there was only 1 dog then).
And a funny thing happened…
Dogs help an IT Support Company to win new clients!
The IT Support Company started to get more leads because his dog was on the website. Somehow it made prospective clients believe that the London IT Support Company was friendly and more approachable. Almost half of the new appointments told him that the dog was the reason they rang him for IT Support and not any of the other IT Support Companies they had looked at online. A higher than average number of those calling for IT Support were female, and they invariably asked about the dogs. Many of them became clients.
IT Support Clients Love The "IT Support Dogs"!
The London IT Support Company realised that it had stumbled onto something big so they expanded its use. One of the dogs was moved to a much more prominent position on the home page. They remained on the ‘About Us’ page even as the company grew and there were more than enough IT Support engineers to fill the page out. They were also used in direct mail marketing and extensively in the IT Support Newsletter that the IT Support Company put on their website and sent out to every contact.
So Who Are The IT Support Dogs?
Originally there was just one IT Support Dog – Jess, a 15 year old Australian Cattle Cross recue dog. Unfortunately due to her advanced years Jess is no longer around, however she remains prominent on the top right corner of the home page. Jess was succeeded by two IT Support Dogs - Ben and Mini, who can now be found on the About Us page. Ben is a Lurcher Cross and another rescue dog. Mini on the other hand is a 6 inch tall pedigree Shih Tzu with a massive personality and a loud voice! The owner of the IT Support Company refuses to take the responsibility for ending up with Mini – she actually belongs to his stepdaughter. The owner no longer works at home as the IT Support Company has grown substantially. However the dogs often come to the office with him. They are occasionally (make that frequently!) heard barking in the background when an IT Support client calls for IT Support.
The use of animals in marketing is well established
What the
IT Support Company owner did not know was that the use of animals in marketing was a secret that was already well known to those in the marketing world. He would certainly never have guessed that it would help an IT Support Company market boring old IT Outsourcing services!
